Downtown Concert Series Presents- PUBLIQuartet

  • St. Peter's Church 33 Throckmorton Street Freehold, NJ, 07728 United States (map)

The Downtown Concert Series is pleased to close their sixth season with the innovative and genre-independent PUBLIQuartet on Saturday, May 14th at 7:30 PMat St. Peter’s Church, Freehold.  With a string program that spans arrangements from the classical canon, contemporary works, original compositions, and open-form improvisations, they expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet.  Dubbed “independent-minded” by The New Yorker, PUBLIQuartet’s creative programming lends a fresh perspective to the classical music scene.

Founded in 2010, PUBLIQuartet is dedicated to presenting new works for the string quartet. PQ was selected as the Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places Ensemble at the 2013 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition, winning their 2013 Sylvia Ann Hewlett Adventurous Artist Prize. PUBLIQuartet’s commitment to supporting emerging composers inspired their innovative program, PUBLIQ Access. In its first two years, the program has received over 250 submissions from composers across the U.S. PQ recently recorded these works on their debut album, and every PUBLIQuartet concert highlights at least one PUBLIQ Access composition, bringing exposure of this music to the widest possible reach, including their sold-out Carnegie Hall debut and newly released self-titled debut album on CAG Records.

PUBLIQuartet has performed in a diverse range of venues from Lincoln Center and SubCulture to the Detroit Institute of Arts and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. They have been presented by the Chautauqua Institution, Newport Jazz Festival, American Composers Orchestra, Fordham University in Lincoln Center, American Modern Ensemble, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Queens College, Nantucket Musical Arts Society, and the Music of Now festival at Symphony Space.

Artistic Director of the series, Mark Hyczko, says “We're very excited to bring PUBLIQuartet to close out our sixth season. With their eclectic mash-up of rock, jazz and classical, they represent what our series is all about - bringing a new twist to the traditional!"

Tickets for the concerts are $25 and $10 for students 18 years and younger. Seating is limited and tickets should be purchased in advance.  The concert will begin at 7:30 PM.  A reception honoring the artists, sponsored by Investors Bank, will be held in front of the church immediately following the performance.

The Downtown Concert Series is committed to bringing extraordinary musical artists to the intimate and historic venue of St. Peter’s Church located in downtown Freehold at 33 Throckmorton Street, Freehold, New Jersey 07728. For additional information and to purchase tickets please visit our website at DowntownConcertSeries.org or call 732~431~8383.
