The Downtown Concert Series will be presenting The Thirteen, a professional choral ensemble on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 PM. Composed of twelve professional singers and their conductor, The Thirteen specializes in the masterpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque and exploring repertoire through the present day. The ensemble has garnered a reputation for inspired and powerful live performances.
Described as having “a tight and attractive vocal blend and excellent choral discipline” by the American Record Guide, the ensemble is committed to historically informed performance and is known for programming works infrequently performed by American choirs. On February 27, they will present a program dubbed “Sister Act: Music for Queens Mary and Elizabeth” which will explore choral works written during the final stages of the Tudor dynasty.
In addition to performing throughout the United States, the Thirteen has released several acclaimed recordings, the most recent of which (“Snow on Snow”) was released earlier this season. Under the direction of conductor Matthew Roberston, who is praised for his “sensitive and nuanced” approach, they will bring their refined sound to the historic space of St. Peter’s Church.
The Artistic Director of the concert series, Mark Hyczko, states “St. Peter’s Church is a space where choral music really blossoms. Presenting this incredible choir performing these English masterworks is a highlight of our season.” Tickets for the concerts are $25 and $10 for students 18 years and younger. Seating is limited and tickets should be purchased in advance. The concert will begin at 7:30 pm. A reception honoring the artists will be hosted by Investors Bank (21 West Main Street, Freehold) following the concert.
